When you start your college life, there are a lot of things you will have to deal with beside assignments and exams. You will have to deal with things such as paying for rent, managing your credit card, and several other things. Among those things, grocery shopping seems like an easy task, but in fact, it is a skill that every college student should learn because if you don’t do it right, it will waste your precious time and money. Here are some tips for college students to make grocery shopping easier and more effective!

Before you go to the grocery shop.

Make a list.

If you often go to the grocery store without any plan and pick up whatever looks good when you get there, please stop because it is an easy way to run up your grocery bill very quickly. Please make a list of what you want to eat for a week and then make a list of all the ingredients and things you will need. The way of doing this is pretty easy, you just need to spend about 10 minutes a day before you go to the grocery store and make a list in the Notes app on your phone. By doing so, you will know exactly what you need to buy and won’t forget anything while you’re shopping - or buy extra stuff you don’t need.

Plan your meals.

While you are making the list, please also remember to check your schedule to see how many meals you need to buy. For example, if in the week you have plans to eat out with your friends, you probably don’t have to buy as many groceries as usual. Moreover, by doing so, you will also figure out what types of meals you need to buy. For example, if you want to spend a little less time cooking during the exam week, you might consider buying ingredients that are easy to cook or even some premade meals.

Look for weekly deals.

Every grocery store has a weekly circular that contains deals and coupons for the week. Google your grocery stores’ websites and you can find their deals and coupons. These weekly deals will save you tons of money. However, please remember that you should only buy the things you need. Do not buy just because you have a deal on it!

Save money on bags.

Some grocery stores have implemented bag taxes to reduce waste, meaning plastic bags at the grocery stores cost money. Bring your bag to save both the environment and money.

While grocery shopping.

Shop by season.

When you buy fruits and vegetables during their peak seasons, they do not only taste better, but they are also cheaper. During the summer, you’ll find excellent fruits such as peaches, strawberries, cherries, etc. and in the fall, you’ll get quality apples, cranberries, etc. If you don’t know which fruits and vegetables are in season, check out Foodland Ontario seasonal food guide website to find out. Just one friendly reminder that does not overbuy them, just buy enough fruits and vegetables for the week that you are sure you are going to use because they can easily rot.

Do the last-minute cart check.

When you’re done shopping, look at your cart before you check out. Use your list to make sure you are all set for your meals.

Ignore the snacks.

Don’t do it. Just ignore the snacks at the check-out counter and look away!

After you shop.

Keep your grocery bill.

Keeping your grocery bill will help you track your food expenses in a week. You will know what your biggest food expenses are and you can scale back if you want.

Go through your fridge and bill.

After you shop, spend some time reorganizing your fridge and shelf. A well–organized fridge will not only save time for you the next time you are trying to cook, but it also makes you feel better every time you open it. Moreover, while you are reorganizing it, you might get more ideas for things to cook, and you won’t forget about items you bought a while ago and never use.

Thank you for reading until the end! We hope that these tips and tricks above will make your grocery shopping easier and more effective. It will take a little effort to do at first but once you do it frequently, it will get easier. Remember that practice makes perfect!
